Saving Deer Park Ridge

We need your help now to ensure that Deer Park Ridge is protected and set aside for future generations.

Dear Friends of Deer Park,

Our “Saving Deer Park Ridge,” campaign started with a hike up the ridge during one of our Order of Interbeing retreats where we witnessed several areas of the ridge, with native chaparral bush, trees, wildflowers, and large rocks, bulldozed to make way for new construction. We decided not to despair―but to act.

We have been able to sign an agreement to protect the ridge from development, but still need your support to raise the remaining funds, currently $165,000 that has been loaned to Deer Park by generous lay practitioners.

On March 17, 2013 we are planning a Deer Park Dedication Day, celebrating this peaceful valley and all it's people, plants and minerals. Please join us!

Saving Deer Park Ridge - Update March 2012 - The Ridge is Safe

It is with gratitude in our hearts that we write to you with wonderful news: The Ridge of Deer Park is protected for perpetuity! An agreement including a Conservation Easement and Covenant has been finalized. This agreement means that the peace and serenity of Deer Park Monastery is safeguarded. It also means that the plants and animals in this valley can continue to make this valley their home, offering life and beauty.

Deer Park Monastery now holds title to an easement and covenant that protects the 120-acre viewshed to the west and to the north of the monastery.

The key protections provided in the agreement are:

  1. Protection of the viewshed from any future development (building, cell phone tower, avocado grove etc.).

  2. Access to the existing hiking trails by Deer Park residents and visitors.

  3. Acceptance of the Deer Park practice of inviting the activity and temple bell (5am-10pm).

  4. Deer Park use of a secondary emergency access road – if required in the future.

We are in need to raise another $165,000 to re-pay the non-interest loans that friends and practitioners have offered us during the past two years in support for this project.

Saving Deer Park Ridge Team includes: Ron Forster – overall coordinator, Elizabeth Hospodarsky – co-chair - fund raising, Duc Yen – real estate agent, Frank Chimienti – real estate attorney, Alicen Wong - attorney, Brother Phap Ho – Deer Park monastic liaison - contact us through the Registration office (, Saving Deer Park Ridge in the subject line.
