The process to take part in AWU is not typical in the sense that one must fill out an application and answer a set of interview questions. The process to express interest and be considered for AWU begins with partaking in three months of community living (referred to as the “Rains Retreat”) from October 2026 to January 2027. At the end of the 90 days, those aspiring to be a part of the AWU program will write a letter to the community expressing their interest. The community will then assess an applicant’s mindfulness practice, harmony within the community, as well as program aspirations before rendering an “acceptance” into the program.
Please do not be concerned about acceptance rates or materials like resumes or letters of recommendation–a deep aspiration for mindful service and the ability to live harmoniously with the community (as demonstrated in the successful completion of the 90-day Rains Retreat) are enough. Nevertheless, committee members reserve the right to render decisions about program fit.
Registration for the Rains retreat opened on March 15, 2026 and will close on September 11, 2026. To register or learn more about the Rains Retreat, please visit this website. (https://deerparkmonastery.org/visit/events/rains-retreat-2026-27/)
*Please note: All Rains Retreat participants follow the same monastery schedule. There are no separate activities for AWU program aspirants during the 90 days.*
