Contemplative Curriculum Writer
Thích Nhất Hạnh School of Interbeing
Location: Escondido, California (on-site) or remote
Start: Late February 2026
About the School
The Thích Nhất Hạnh School of Interbeing is a new K–8 independent school opening with grades K–5 in August 2026, located at the foothills of Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, CA. Rooted in mindfulness, compassion, and ethical leadership, the school is rooted in the Plum Village tradition and the teachings of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh.
The School of Interbeing is being developed as part of an emerging village ecosystem alongside a mindful Happy Farm, a future senior care home, lay residences, a youth social service program - all under the care of a spiritual practice center. The school is also cultivating academic research partnerships focused on contemplative learning and wellbeing.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Contemplative Curriculum Writer to support the articulation of our foundational K–5 framework and curricular resources. This role is ideal for an experienced K-5 curriculum writer who is deeply aligned with contemplative education and skilled at translating values, frameworks, and diverse source materials into clear, classroom-ready resources.
This role is focused on synthesis, clarity, and usability, translating diverse curricular inputs and contemplative frameworks into classroom-ready resources that teachers can confidently draw upon in their lesson planning.
The Curriculum Writer will work closely with the Pedagogy Team and founding teachers to ensure coherence, clarity, and pedagogical integrity across grade levels.
Deliverables
The consultant(s) will be responsible for delivering the following in a clear, well-organized document designed to support teachers in their curriculum development:
(1) General teacher-facing pedagogical guidance, largely informed by resources and structures developed by the Pedagogy Team, that supports educators in:
- Designing their own lessons and units
- Integrating contemplative, ethical, and academic dimensions organically
- Adapting materials to small and multi-age classroom contexts
(2) Two sets of scope and sequence-aligned lesson ideas and learning pathways for K-2 and 3-5 classrooms. The Pedagogy Team will provide the scope and sequence documents, and the contemplative curriculum writer will compile a clear, easy-to-use resource for each classroom level that provides teachers with suggested learning experiences, practices, prompts, and approaches (not scripted lesson plans).
(3) A curated and annotated resource library aligned to each grade band, drawing from:
- Planting Seeds
- Happy Teachers Change the World
- Happy Families Change the World
- Joyfully Together
- SEE Learning curriculum
- Children’s literature
- Interviews with monastics leading the Children’s Program at Deer Park Monastery
- Other provided resources from the Pedagogy Team
Ideal Consultant Profile

- Experience as an elementary school educator
- Familiarity with mindfulness-based education, SEL, ethics education, or contemplative pedagogy
- Strong synthesis and writing skills
- Responsiveness to feedback and ability to iterate
- Alignment with the teachings and practices of Thích Nhất Hạnh
Timeline and Logistics
- Engagement expected to take place in advance of the school’s August 2026 opening, ideally starting in late February or early March 2026.
- Four months of consulting services (approximately 920 hours). The TNH School of Interbeing team is open to finding two or three qualified curriculum writers to split this job part-time over four months if needed.
- In-person or hybrid work preferred, virtual is acceptable.
