DonateDear Plum Village Community,
Dear Friends of Deer Park Monastery,
Dear Sangha Warriors,
On Sunday, Oct.12, as we gather for our memorial ceremony honoring our Teacher Thầy and our elder brother Thầy Giác Thanh, first abbot of Deer Park, we are invited to also send our prayers, love, and healing energy to the Apache people at Oak Flat—Chi’chil Biłdagoteel—a sacred site in Arizona now under threat from a proposed copper mine.
This land, revered by the Western Apache for countless generations, is in danger of being hollowed into a massive crater if the transfer to a mining company proceeds. Though the U.S. Supreme Court has again declined to hear the Apache religious freedom case, there is still hope: a district court has delayed any transfer until January 7, 2026, when further hearings will be held. Our collective mindfulness, compassion, and solidarity can help sustain their efforts.
On Monday, October 13 (Indigenous Peoples’ Day) at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, a multi-faith vigil will be livestreamed from Oak Flat with Apache Stronghold and spiritual leaders from many traditions.

During our lunch gathering on Sunday, October 12, we will come together in mindfulness and chant to offer our prayers and energy of support to the people joining the Echo Vigil the following day, Monday, October 13, the Indigenous People's Day.
Please join us in this wave of prayers for Oak Flat, unfolding across time and space from October 11 to 20. As we chant, eat mindfully, and open our hearts, we are in touch with the sacred land of Oak Flat and with all those standing for its protection.
May our collective practice bring strength, clarity, and healing to our Earth and all her children.
Let us dedicate our practice this weekend to the healing of the Earth and the protection of all sacred places.
As Thầy reminds us: “We are the Earth, and the Earth is us.”
With gratitude and deep interbeing,
Your Brothers and Sisters at Deer Park Monastery
