The Action Wake Up Program

Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and Sister Chan Khong forged a vision of engaged youth working side-by-side with communities in 1960s Vietnam. Based on Buddhist principles of non-violence and compassionate action, this vision became a reality with the School of Youth for Social Service. It continues today in Wake Up, a worldwide movement of young people building healthy and compassionate societies.

Welcoming Our First Cohort

Five members of the inaugural Action Wake Up cohort received the Five Mindfulness Trainings after three months of practice on the Rains Retreat at Deer Park.

Phase 2: Community Engagement and Ongoing Mindfulness Training (January - October)

Mindful Service & Applied Ethics: After the initial 90-day Rains Retreat, AWU participants will work on action-oriented projects for 9 months on initiatives like the Happy Farm, Wake Up Retreat, and the Thich Nhat Hanh School of Interbeing. They will also work on action-oriented projects with community-based organizations in San Diego, California.

Spiritual Practice & Community Living: Monastics, lay Dharma teachers, and Order of Interbeing core members will continue to provide mentorship throughout this phase. Participants will continue taking classes and engage in mindful service at Deer Park Monastery. They will have opportunities to connect with existing Plum Village sanghas (“community”) and learn how to build and facilitate their own.

Phase 3:  Rains Retreat 2.0

Leadership Development: At the end of the 9-month service period, participants will finish the program through the next Rains Retreat. Participants will evaluate the impact of their work, reflect on their personal transformation, and help guide the next generation of Action Wake Up participants.

Successful participants may also be invited to receive the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings and become a core member of the Order of Interbeing, subject to the discretion of the advisory team and monastic community.

Donate

Action Wake Up is actively developing the next generation of bodhisattvas. Your donation contributes to our mission to learn, practice, and teach the art of mindful living in the Plum Village tradition in order to realize Thay’s vision for a vibrant and healing Beloved Community of happy people who live in peace and harmony with each other and the Earth.

The Action Wake Up House is located at Simplicity Hamlet at the foothills of the Hidden Mountain (just a few miles down the road from Deer Park). The Action Wake Uppers live, eat, and practice here, requiring donations for basic living expenses such as food, maintenance, and furnishings. Your donation also supports the start-up costs for the program as well as transportation to community service projects at a local hospital.

Action Wake Up FAQs

The process to take part in AWU is not typical in the sense that one must fill out an application and answer a set of interview questions. The process to express interest and be considered for AWU begins with partaking in three months of community living (referred to as the “Rains Retreat”) from October 2026 to January 2027. At the end of the 90 days, those aspiring to be a part of the AWU program will write a letter to the community expressing their interest. The community will then assess an applicant’s mindfulness practice, harmony within the community, as well as program aspirations before rendering an “acceptance” into the program.

Please do not be concerned about acceptance rates or materials like resumes or letters of recommendation–a deep aspiration for mindful service and the ability to live harmoniously with the community (as demonstrated in the successful completion of the 90-day Rains Retreat) are enough. Nevertheless, committee members reserve the right to render decisions about program fit.

Registration for the Rains retreat opened on March 15, 2026 and will close on September 11, 2026. To register or learn more about the Rains Retreat, please visit this website. (https://deerparkmonastery.org/visit/events/rains-retreat-2026-27/)

*Please note: All Rains Retreat participants follow the same monastery schedule. There are no separate activities for AWU program aspirants during the 90 days.*

There are three phases to the AWU program. The first is the aforementioned Rains Retreat (October 2026 - January 2027), which is not specific to AWU. At the end of the 90-day Rains Retreat, a retreatant may express their interest to take part in AWU by writing a letter to the community (see question 1).

If accepted, they will take part in both the second and third phases of the AWU program without further application. The second and third phases include: Community Engagement and Ongoing Mindfulness Training (January 2027 - October 2027) and Rains Retreat 2.0 (October 2027 - January 2028).

Please see below for cost options during the first phase of the program (the Rains Retreat). Detailed information on scholarships and financial assistance can also be found on https://deerparkmonastery.org/visit/events/rains-retreat-2025-2026/

Scholarships will also be available at the completion of the first phase to defray the cost of the second (9 month) phase of the AWU program. Candidates seeking financial assistance may detail their need in their letter to the community at the end of the Rains Retreat. Otherwise, the cost of the program is $1,500 per month, including room and board.

No, we kindly ask that you fully commit your time to AWU volunteer and practice commitments. Spiritual development also occurs during periods of rest, so we encourage participants to use their free time to take care of themselves, reflect, etc.

There are several service opportunities throughout the program. They include service work at a local hospital, work on the Happy Farm, volunteer work at the Thich Nhat Hanh School of Interbeing, AWU house-related activities, and monastery event and retreat coordination.

The service schedule is to be determined.

Meal stipends will be provided to each participant so that individuals living in the AWU house can individually supplement their dietary needs. Other sources of groceries will come from the monastery, primarily organic produce from the Happy Farm.

Meal preparation will largely be communal and established by a rotation schedule for cooking and cleaning. There will be certain days where meals can be taken at the monastery (this is to be determined), but most meals will be prepared by participants at the AWU house. These details will be arranged and managed by AWU participants.

Please keep an eye on the website–we will update it as we approach program dates. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us in case you have further questions. We hope AWU fulfills your aspirations! Please email awu@deerparkmonastery.org with your question or letter of interest.
