Children's Expressions of Gratitude
Young children, touched by a family retreat, write to share their love and gratitude with the monastics of Deer Park.

Dear monastics of Deer Park Monastery,
My life has changed a lot because of the family retreat in 2024.
Thanks to you, now I love meditation! When mom invites the bell, I always want to hear it again because it is so beautiful. How are you doing? I miss you all very much.
Guess what I did on January 14th? I made my first ever calligraphy! On my first one I didn't like it. I got mad. But instead of getting upset, I simply just thought “I don't want to do my calligraphy in anger, I want to do it in happiness,” and that helped me alot.
With lots of gratitude and compassion,
Lena H. (age 9)
Dear monastics of the Deer Park Monastery,
I hope that you are well. I heard that many people in California are hurt from the fires. Is everyone okay? If I was there I would do whatever I could to help too. Thank you for taking such good care of us during the family retreat in 2024. I loved the nourishing meals that you all made. I especially loved the mac & cheese. I also really enjoyed going to the oak grove. I learned that meditation isn’t about being bored and silent, it’s about being peaceful, calm, grateful, or gentle. I really appreciated it when you invited the bell every 30 minutes. Every time, I want to hear it again! All because of you, I’ve been practicing at home! In my family, Bao Bun {baby Robin} is doing great!
With deep gratitude,
Elaine H (age 8)
Dear monastics,
Thank you for taking care of me at the family retreat in June, 2024! I especially liked when we would do the children’s program at Oak Grove. I loved the activity where I got to build a peace snow globe. My favourite meditation was the mandarin one that Brother Forest taught me. After that meditation, I felt a true feeling of peace and happiness. I feel welcome there. I'm very grateful to the cooks for the yummy food and peaceful meditations you all gave to me! Bao Bun\Robin has grown way more! I really appreciate your care and work!
With a smile,
Noah H (age 9)
In harmony with Thay’s practice of writing love letters to share gratitude, love, and peace with those around him, we asked practitioners to submit love letters to Deer Park describing what it means to them.
If you would like to submit your own Love Letter to Deer Park, please email us at loveletters@deerparkmonastery.org. We love receiving your writings, poetry, and photos. Please include your name and Dharma name if you have one.
