Roshi Joan Halifax

Roshi Joan Halifax is a renowned Zen teacher, author, anthropologist, and pioneer in the fields of contemplative care and engaged Buddhism. As the founder and abbot of Upaya Zen Center, she has devoted her life to integrating meditation practice with compassionate action in the world, particularly in the areas of end-of-life care, social engagement, and environmental stewardship.

Their teachings reflected a common aspiration: to cultivate mindfulness, compassion, and peace as a foundation for personal and collective transformation. Over the years, Roshi Joan has practiced with and supported the Plum Village community, and her connection with Deer Park Monastery reflects the spirit of interbeing and engaged Buddhism that both teachers embodied.
