We invite you to join us for our Second Annual Rhythm of the Earth Mindful Music Festival at Deer Park Monastery.

This year, we’re raising funds to produce a film honoring Sister Chan Khong, the first fully-ordained monastic disciple of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.

Join us in the hidden mountain for a day of music, meditation, and togetherness. A day for everyone – friends, family, children, adults, and sangha members.

The gate opens at 12:30pm and closes at 5:00pm. All ticketholders must arrive before the gate closes at 5:00pm.

In addition to the in-person festival, we will also be live streaming on our YouTube channel where you can make a donation on the day of the event. Please note that the livestream will start later in the day at 4:00pm.

Performing Artists

Born I

Meditation teacher and hip-hop artist Born I is holding space at the intersection of Hip Hop and Mindfulness. One of his hit tracks, “Om Mani Padme Hum” is a tribute to Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Born I has also collaborated with monastics including Brother Phap Huu from Plum Village on “Little Star” which has received 84,000 views on YouTube.

Joe Reilly & the Community Gardeners

Joe Reilly is a singer, songwriter, social worker, and educator from Michigan who writes songs from his heart. Joe’s songs are playful, clever, engaging, joyful, and always have something meaningful to say. The core of his message is an invitation to heal our relationships with ourselves, with each other, and with the earth. Joe uses his music to bring people together and build community across lines of race, class, gender, ethnicity, religion, age, and nationality.

Presenting a set of freely improvised music, the Free Cloud Collective is comprised of an all-star lineup of some of creative jazz music’s most celebrated improvising musicians, each with their own impressive history and list of accomplishments.

Featuring twin brothers Nels Cline (electric guitar, best known for his work in the influential rock band Wilco) and Alex Cline (drums, percussion) in one of their rare appearances together, Peter Kuhn (clarinets), Chris DiMeglio (trumpet, voice), Miguel-Atwood Ferguson (5-string electric violin), Joshua White (keyboard), and Curtis Robertson Jr., the ensemble blends its combination of exceptional talents into a collective offering of spontaneous music that exemplifies the experience of dwelling in the present moment.

The revenue from your ticket sales will be used to support the production and distribution of a documentary film honoring Sister Chan Khong, Peace Activist and Thich Nhat Hanh’s right-hand nun who helped build the Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism.

For a $1,000 donation, we will offer you 1 dorm room to stay Friday and Saturday nights during the music festival. Your stay will include vegan meals and a special bonfire with the musicians on Friday night.

You can feel free to put up to 5 ppl in the room along with you. Please contact communications@deerparkmonastery.org if you are interested. Limited rooms available. First come first serve.

FAQs

This is not your average music festival – it will be held in the serene Deer Park Monastery in the Escondido mountains.

The festival will be held from 1:00 to 9:15pm, with a light mindful dinner being served at 5:00pm.

The gate opens at 12:30pm and closes at 5:00pm. All ticketholders must arrive before the gate closes at 5:00pm.

We invite you to meet the monastics at 1:00PM in the Meditation Hall Parking Lot to begin the festival with a greeting, song circle, land acknowledgment, and walking meditation. This is a day of mindfulness practice, where musicians, lay friends, and monastics unite to practice together and enjoy the healing benefits of mindful music.

We ask you to be present for the land acknowledgement at the beginning of the festival at 1:00pm, if possible. This is a sacred ceremony with our indigenous elders to ask permission of the land to host the festival.

If you are tuning into the livestream, please note that the livestream will start at 4:00pmPT.

Please wear casual and modest clothing that is comfortable for sitting. We ask that all clothing cover the shoulders, midsection, and knees even when sitting in a meditative posture. No shorts or tank tops. Please wear or bring weather-appropriate clothing and shoes suitable for walking on nature trails so you can fully enjoy the outdoor walking meditation with the community. Also, avoid wearing perfumes or other products that may affect those who are sensitive or allergic to fragrances. We thank you for your kind cooperation.

Once you arrive at our Main Gate, drive up the road and then please follow instructions given by the volunteer traffic coordinators who will help you find a place to park.

Due to limited parking spots and in an effort to reduce carbon footprint, we highly encourage you to carpool to the festival. You may coordinate rides with friends of Deer Park using our rideshare board.

Given the mindful nature of this festival, we require that you follow the guidelines below to ensure a safe, serene environment for our monastic community and the visiting friends who will be joining us for the festival:

1. Firearms, weapons, knives, swords, fireworks, and other explosive materials are strictly prohibited.
2. Alcoholic beverages, smoking/vaping and illicit substances are not permitted. Possession of either will result in dismissal from the grounds.
3. Pets are not permitted. Even if they are riding in your purse.
4. Please refrain from yelling or bringing loud noisemakers.
5. Stay on paths and general gathering areas; do not wander into the hiking trails.
6. Respect personal boundaries and refrain from behavior that may make others uncomfortable, such as unwanted romantic pursuits, sexual gestures, inappropriate touching, or disregarding dress code guidelines.
7. Trash goes in the trash receptacles. We provide recycling containers and compost bins and encourage you to use compostable/recyclable products and materials. Please practice pack-in-pack-out to reduce the trash accumulating onsite.
8. Report any behavior violating guidelines to a monastic or staff member.
